Young Ladies School in Wilberforce Road
Stories of Wilberforce Road: No. 3 in 1881
A Young Ladies School in Wilberforce Road?
Yes, here, at number 3 Wilberforce Road there was a Young Ladies School in 1881.
Number 3 was one of the block of three houses (3,5,7) which was the first block to be built in the new Wilberforce Road. The houses were built by the time of the 1871 census, but not all occupied at that time.
The head of the household in 1881 was Eleanor Clark, an upholsterer's widow, and her daughter, Ruth, appears to have been the only teacher, so I'm not sure how good the school would have been! The house also housed six of Mrs Arnold's other children, a lodger, and, of course a domestic servant. A large house with a large population to look after.
